Audiences

Build, save and reuse geographic audience segments from census traits and points of interest

Last updated 11 Oct 2026Reference · article 10 of 10

An audience is a set of geographic areas that match the traits you describe: census traits (such as an income range) and points-of-interest (POI) traits (such as being near a chain of stores). You build audiences on the Audiences page, save them, and reuse them in automations.

Open Audiences in the sidebar (under Build), or go to /workspace/audiences.

The Audiences List

The list shows the audiences of your active project. A strip at the top counts Live, Drafts and Archived audiences, shows their Combined reach, and shows how many are Locked and how many need approval.

  • Use the All, Live, Draft and Archived chips and the search box to narrow the list. When your audiences span more than one country or level, Country and Level chips appear too
  • Each row shows the name, scope, number of traits, number of areas, reach, how many automations use it, and its status
  • A row's actions menu offers Duplicate, Archive (or Restore for an archived audience) and Delete. Deleting is permanent

Click Build audience to start a new one.

Building an Audience

The builder at /workspace/audiences/new has a scope bar across the top, a palette of traits on the left, the traits you have added in the middle, and a map beside them.

Country and Level

Pick a Country and a Level. Countries whose census data is not ready yet are listed as "Coming Soon" and cannot be chosen. The levels are the country's own area levels; see Geographic Levels.

Census Traits

On the Census tab of the palette, search or expand the categories and click a variable to add it; click it again to remove it. A new census trait starts as a z-score range from -3 to 3. On the trait you choose how to measure it:

ModeMeaning
Z-ScoreHow far the area is from the average, in standard deviations
DecileThe area's rank from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest)
Raw ValueThe actual count or amount

You then select the range of values to keep. See Census Variables for what z-scores and deciles mean.

POI Traits

On the POI tab, pick Categories (a place category) or Chains (search by chain name), choose how proximity works, and click Add POI Trait:

SettingMeaning
Within DistanceAreas within a Max Distance (0.5 to 50 km) of any matching place
By DensityAreas with at least Minimum POIs (1 to 100) matching places, looking within a Search Radius (0.5 to 50 km) of each area's centre

Combining Traits

The traits you add appear in the middle pane. Combine traits with AND or OR sets how they combine. To group traits, hold Shift while dragging one trait onto another; each group has its own AND or OR.

Compare

The Compare control decides what z-scores and deciles are measured against:

  • Population (the default) uses the pre-computed values relative to the full population. It is faster
  • Selection recalculates them relative to the areas that match, which is more accurate

The Map

The map beside the builder draws the matching areas. Switch between Polygon mode (precise boundaries) and H3 hexagon mode (faster rendering). In H3 mode a Res menu offers resolutions 5 to 8; a higher number means smaller hexagons. See Census Data for how the map layers work.

Preview Figures

Once you add a trait, a strip under the scope bar shows the number of matching Areas, the Population (or, with a census trait, the matched total of that variable beside its total for the whole level), and, for POI traits, the number of Locations.

Saving an Audience

Click Save, enter a Name and an optional Description, and click Save again. You need a country and level first, and an active project; without a project the save is refused with "Select a project before creating an audience".

A new audience is a Draft. What is stored is the country, level, census traits, groups, how they combine, and the list of matching areas as it stood when you saved. POI traits are not stored with the audience, so they do not come back when you reopen it.

Saving is a governed action, so your rules can block it.

Managing a Saved Audience

Click a row to open the audience at /workspace/audiences/[id]. The header shows its status (Live, Draft or Archived), a Locked badge when it is awaiting approval, its country and level, and how many automations use it. The same builder is below; click Save changes to store edits.

  • Promote to live (draft audiences only) makes the audience live. It is governed: rules can block it, or hold it for approval, and while approval is pending the audience is locked and cannot be edited or promoted
  • Duplicate makes a draft copy named with "(copy)"
  • Archive archives it, and Restore returns an archived audience to draft
  • A footer lists the automations that reference the audience

Using an Audience in an Automation

Add an Audience node to an automation and choose Use saved audience instead of Build new. The list offers your live and draft audiences. The node outputs the areas stored with the audience; it does not re-run the traits, so the audience changes only when you re-save it. See the Audience node for its fields and output columns.
